* * *

Better than him? What the hell did that mean? She was frozen to her spot. The night of the Diwali party, Anita had drunkenly told her that Amar was in love with her, and had been forever. Divya had not known what to make of that information until they’d kissed on Lola. And he had kissed her back, with intent. With desire...

But then he’d pulled back, and today he’d pushed her away. Well, she did not need to be told again. If he wanted to move out and rent space and not work together, that was fine by her. She had things to do.

She turned off her oven and grabbed the keys to her bike. She needed to ride. She automatically headed for Anita’s.

But as she idled at a light, she realized that was the one place she couldn’t go. Her heart hurt. Eventually, she rode around town until she cooled off and was thinking clearly.

What had she been thinking when she kissed him? Obviously, that she was falling for him. She wiped the thought from her mind.

She drove out toward the highway, and north and east past Ellicott City. She took a random exit and found herself in some older neighborhoods. She’d stopped to get her bearings when a familiar photo caught her eye. She got off her bike and went closer. She studied the picture and there was no doubt. It was Fury. His family was looking for him. She was amazed, because she had to be over ten miles from home. She ripped the picture from the telephone pole and ran back to her bike.

She pulled into her driveway and raced into the house, flinging her helmet in the garage on her way. “Amar! Amar!” She waved the picture as she ran to the kitchen, catching her breath. Right now, she did not care about how awkward things were between them. “I found something.” She rounded the corner and nearly bumped into him. He looked even sadder than when she had left. “What’s wrong?”

“Divya. I’ve been calling you.”

“I can’t hear my phone when I’m riding.” Butterflies took up space in her stomach as she continued to look at him. “But I found this. Past Ellicott City.” She shoved the paper at him.

He glanced at it and turned back to her. “I know. The vet called. They found Fury’s owner.”

The next day, Divya and Amar drove Fury, whose real name was Milo—what kind of name was that, anyway?—to the vet where the “real” owners were going to come get him—after over a month. All Divya could think was it better be a cute kid or a little old lady. A minivan pulled up and sure enough, the cutest three-year-old twins popped out of the van along with an older woman. So it was both. Great.

Fury whined and wagged his tail and ran to them. The little traitor. The children cuddled the dog, and Fury/Milo ate up the attention. The little old lady, it turned out, was their grandmother, and Fury/Milo was her dog.
